History of the Iranian Association of Medical Physicists (IAMP)
The Iranian Association of Medical Physicists (IAMP) was officially founded in May 1991 (Ordibehesht 1370, Persian calendar) during the First National Congress of Medical Physics of Iran, which was held at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences with the collaboration of leading Iranian professors and specialists in medical physics. The Association was established under the name Iranian Medical Physics Association (IMPA). The Congress was chaired by Dr. Hossein Sadeghi Shoja and the scientific secretary was Dr. Khalil Gholipour Khalili. This memorable and highly constructive event received enthusiastic support from all participants. The strong demand for unity, collaboration, and scientific organization among Iranian medical physicists at that time led to the establishment of a scientific association. Seventeen medical physics professors from universities across Iran, who had gathered in Hamedan to discuss the establishment of M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in medical physics, placed the creation of this association on their agenda.
During this meeting, the statutes of the Association were drafted, and the founding board members were unanimously elected as follows:
•    Dr. Azim Arbabi
•    Dr. Gholam Hossein Rahbari
•    Dr. Hassan Asgari Shirazi
•    Dr. Ali Akbar Khodadoust
Following a public announcement in a widely circulated newspaper and official invitations sent to medical physicists nationwide, the first General Assembly was convened on September 30, 1993 (Mehr 8, 1372) at the Iranian Medical Council headquarters, with representatives from the Ministry of Health and Medical Education present. After a written ballot, the first Executive Board of the Iranian Medical Physicists Association was elected and subsequently approved by the Ministry’s Commission of Scientific Associations:
1.    Dr. Azim Arbabi – President
2.    Dr. Ali Akbar Sharafi – Treasurer
3.    Dr. Roghieh Bagherzadeh Akbari – Vice President
4.    Dr. Bahram Bolouri – Executive Member
5.    Dr. Hassan Asgari Shirazi – Executive Member
6.    Dr. Khalil Gholipour Khalili – Alternate Member
7.    Dr. Ali Akbar Khodadoust – Alternate Member
8.    Dr. Gholam Hossein Rahbari – Auditor
The Executive Board, headquartered at Jorjani Hospital in Tehran with the support of its Department of Medical Physics, held regular meetings to lay the foundation of the Association. They initiated membership recruitment by sending invitations and application forms to faculty members of universities, research centers, and governmental and private institutions across the country. Membership was defined in three categories:
1.    Full Membership
2.    Associate Membership
3.    Student Membership
From its inception, the Association engaged in international collaboration. Extensive correspondence was conducted with the International Organization of Medical Physics (IOMP), leading to Iran’s official admission as a full member on December 10, 1993 (Azar 19, 1372). Currently, more than 69 countries are members of IOMP, and its Medical Physics World Bulletin is distributed to all members.
In June 1994 (Khordad 1373), the Iranian Association of Medical Physicists, in cooperation with Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, IOMP, the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), and with support from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), organized a highly successful International Workshop on Radiotherapy Oncology Physics. This one-week course was held at the Laleh Hotel in Tehran, aimed at continuing education for radiotherapy physicists, medical physicists, and radiation oncologists working in radiotherapy centers across the country. Under the supervision of Dr. Azim Arbabi (Course Director), prominent international faculty including Prof. Faiz Khan, Prof. B. Paliwal (President of AAPM), Prof. James Purdy, Dr. Leroy Humphries, and Dr. Azam Niroomand-Rad were invited to participate. At the conclusion, participants were awarded international certificates jointly signed by the IAMP, AAPM, and IOMP.
