The Iranian Association of Medical Physicists (IAMP) was established in May 1991 during the First Iranian Medical Physics Congress, which was hosted by Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in collaboration with leading Iranian professors and specialists in the field. The congress, chaired by Dr. Hossein Sadeghi Shoja and organized by Dr. Khalil Gholipour Khalili, marked a milestone in the development of medical physics in Iran.

The congress was highly successful and warmly welcomed by participants. Following this achievement, the need for greater cohesion, collaboration, and professional organization among medical physicists in Iran became increasingly evident. Consequently, a scientific forum was formed, and the establishment of a professional association was placed on the agenda of a gathering of 17 professors from universities across the country. This meeting, held in Hamedan, also focused on reviewing and planning master’s and doctoral programs in medical physics, laying the foundation for the creation of IAMP.
